A Message From our new District 10 Governor Sheryl Flanagin

Honoring the Past and Empowering the Future

Dear Zonta District 10 Zontians,

As this new Zonta biennium begins, I am honored, excited, and humbled to serve as your governor.  What wonderful opportunities we have not only to celebrate our centennial anniversary but also to further our efforts to empower women and girls!

Being privileged to attend the Zonta International Convention in Japan, I experienced both the recognition of our past accomplishments and the inspiration to continue the work of Zonta.

First, let’s look at the acknowledgements received by D10.  Quite impressive!

Foundation Recognition: to Zonta Club of Brownsville for their dedicated and generous support of over $20,000 (Their actual donations during the 2016-18 biennium reached over $50,000!); to Zonta District 10 for an honorable mention for giving, ranking sixth; and for 100% clubs giving to ZIF.

Membership Recognition: Zonta Club of Greater East Texas for increasing membership by 16 or more. Zonta Clubs of Brownsville, Fredericksburg, and Lafayette for increasing membership from 11-15.

Service Award:  Zonta Club of Houston, 3rd Place for their Women’s Home Vocational Training Service.

Share Your Story:  Zonta Club of Johnson County for their Zonta Zoom Race to End Violence story Against Women and Zonta Club of Houston for their “Generosity Following Harvey Hurricane” story.

Zonta D10 Zontians serving on International level:  Monica de la Cerda from Zonta Club of Houston for her role in the development of the pilot project Women in Technology Scholarship and her continued appointment as chair of this  ZI committee; Judy Kautz, Zonta Club of Central Oklahoma, selected to serve on the ZI Service Committee and as credentials chair for 2020 Convention; Barby Crabtree, Zonta Club of Dallas, selected to served on the ZI Investment Committee and the ZI Foundation Investment Committee; Sharon Miles, Zonta Club of Johnson County, to continue to serve on the Endowment Committee.

Obviously, Zonta D10 is proud and strong!  And, since I’m sharing such good news, I have more.  Our YWPA district recipient submitted by Zonta Club of Central Oklahoma, Jenny Vy Ha, has received one of ten International Awards and will receive an additional $5500 from ZI.  Also, Captain Shreve High School of Shreveport received a 3rd place Emma L. Conlon Service Award of $250.  We love to see our young women succeed!

With such a foundation, we can only get stronger.  Your D10 Board recently met and worked on developing a strategic plan to meet the 2018-20 ZI goals and are excited about the possibilities that await us.

I ask you now to SAVE the Date for our 2nd Governor’s Summit to be held on Saturday, October 20, in Cleburne, Texas.  Zonta Club of Johnson County is busy organizing what promises to be a fun, informative, meaningful meeting.  Watch for The Call, which will be going out mid-August.   I can’t wait to see you there!

Thank you for selecting me as your governor for this biennium, which will certainly be special as we celebrate our Centennial Anniversary.  I look forward to the growth and progress of Zonta District 10 and Zonta International as we honor the past and empower the future.

Yours in Zonta,
Sheryl Flanagin
